Typically parents first go to the school because they recognize their child is struggling and maybe they’ve done their research and have heard of dyslexia and so they ask the school professionals if that might be the cause of their child’s struggle. Tests for dyslexia look at a number of skills related to reading, such as decoding, phonological awareness, and comprehension. But sometimes those tests have picture clues that can help kids figure out the words and the meaning of what they’re reading.
These are known as educational assessments, psychoeducational assessments or evaluations. Before you book one, it’s important to know what is likely to happen before, during and after the assessment. For many parents and guardians of children with learning disabilities, as well as adult sufferers, that sense of powerlessness, of being lost with no idea where to start, is nearly as crippling as ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, etc. Often, they’ll have access to resources and referrals that can help with the price of an assessment.
After all, it is difficult to understand someone who speaks haltingly or without natural intonation. As a parent, you have certain rights and responsibilities when it comes to your child’s educational journey. Dyslexia Theories and Models
When your child is old enough, read the stories together after your child hears them. Parents are at their most vulnerable when their child is struggling. They want information and trust experts to tell them what is wrong—and to give advice about how they can make it better. But they need to be careful about finding the information they desperately seek and the advice they fervently want. Sam’s eligibility team answered yes to all of these questions and thus determined that Sam does meet eligibility criteria for SLD. Figure 2 is an example of the Dyslexia Assessment Worksheet that the eligibility team could use in considering this determination. Through the RTI process, Sam’s teachers were able to document lack of adequate progress, but they did not have enough information to understand the cause of his difficulties. What parents can do
Challenge # 3 – Professionals who are otherwise qualified don’t know which assessments they should be using to diagnose students. 讀寫障礙評估 at school also may not capture how slow and difficult reading actually is for kids.
